Sitting at my desk, thinking about what to write today, and eating a bit of rocky road. The first two parts of that statement are probably pretty similar for a lot of us, but I doubt there are many who hold the same affinity for ice cream that I do. Ice cream and I have been having an affair for as long as I can remember. When I was a kid, whenever we spotted a Twistee Treat, my dad would dart across lanes of traffic to make a bee line for a vanilla chocolate dip. When I visited Italy, I got lost and sat down with a map in one hand and a gelato in the other. Once I figured out where I was, I rewarded myself with another gelato. I own an ice cream machine - a pretty nice one - and made ice creams for my friends back when I had the time. I've been to the Ben & Jerry's factory multiple times. Ben & Jerry's Superfudge Chunk is my all time favorite flavor, but I also love rich and delicate flavors like lavender honey and pecan. I'm a dedicated lover too. Sorbet and frozen yoghurt are lovely, but they are not substitutes for ice cream. I know that part of this dessert favoritism probably stems from an emotional response to the memories I have associated with ice cream, but there's just something perfect about frozen cream and sugar that my tastebuds adore.
I don't have the love for ice cream that you do, but I did buy some today! I think the sun shine made me...
ReplyDeleteI connected to your post before I even opened it! I'm an ice cream lover too! When someone asks my favorite food, ice cream is my immediate response! Glad to see I'm not alone! Two summers ago we inherited an antique (crank) ice cream maker from my husband's grandfather. It makes the BEST ice cream and is a wonderful memory for my husband. Enjoy! Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we have a sentimental attachment to ice cream because we ate it with our parents, who gave it to us because they particularly enjoy it too. Nature and nurture. I especially liked the image of you sitting down with your gelato and your map.
ReplyDeleteI prefer custard over ice cream and my favorite B & J is coffee heath bar crunch...had it yesterday...Publix had BJ bogo! Are you jealous yet? I think, thought, that Hope might rival you with her ice cream addition! What flavors have you made lately?
ReplyDeleteIce cream is something I rarely have, but when I do I often wonder why I don't have it more often. It may be because it is just too hard to choose a flavor as I love so many. I do enjoy ice cream in places where they fold in nuts, chocolates, fruit, etc.. I have many friends who crave ice cream rain, sun or snow. Yep, snow. That means I get a scoop every now and again.

Oh my love, ice cream calls me too. Your slice brought me right back to a lunch period in my classroom. You across the table from me, unpacking a soft-side cooler you'd stock with dry ice and individual servings of black raspberry ice cream you'd brought us. That ice cream was so good--butter and berry and so deliciously creamy.Yum!
ReplyDeleteSeems you found some delectable inspiration. I enjoy ice cream too, though not as much as others in my family.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say that I have no idea what Twistee Treat is!
Twister Treat is amazing!!! It's a walk-up soft serve place famous for dipping it in a chocolate shell. The building itself is shaped like a giant ice cream cone!
DeleteI watched Supersize Me with my students last week (Health class), and the son on the Robbins side of Baskin and Robbins talked about growing up around all that ice cream. They even had an ice cream cone shaped pool! You two would get along well, I think! :)
